Looking for a new TV can be pretty stressful, yet extremely exciting. You probably have a lot of emotions going through your mind – “how much is this going to cost me,” “I can’t wait to watch football on this,” and much more. Finding a reliable TV installation provider and choosing the right TV for your home isn’t as simple as big size, small price.
Depending on what you’re looking for, you’ll want to get a TV that you know you’re going to love. Your TV isn’t something you can just replace regularly. In fact, the average American only replaces their TV once every seven or eight years. All this considered, let’s determine what key things you should look for when purchasing your next TV.
Screen Size
The size of your screen is the first and most important decision you are going to make when choosing your next TV. When choosing a screen size, it really comes down to personal preference and the size of the room the TV is going to be placed in.
Typically, a larger room, such as your living room, will have a larger TV than the one in your bedroom. There are plenty of other factors you need to consider when you pick your ideal screen size, including the price and resolution of your TV, as well as your field of view or distance from the TV.
Resolution
Your TV’s resolution will determine the quality of the picture on the screen. It includes the number of pixels displayed on your TV that form the picture. If your TV has more pixels, then it will have more detail. The resolutions are determined in a width x height measurement, so how many pixels are horizontal and how many pixels are vertical. Here are a few options to consider for your next TV resolution.
High Definition (HD)
A standard HD TV has a screen resolution of 1920×1080, containing a total of about 2 million pixels. While it is still popular in most homes and can often be found at a cheaper price point than its successor, the UHD TV, many families are upgrading to higher quality resolution. HD TV came as a huge upgrade to analog and digital TVs, but we are seeing HD TVs slowly die out.
Ultra High Definition (UHD or 4K)
4K TVs are the upgraded versions of HD TVs. These TVs are becoming more and more common in American households and have a screen resolution of 3840×2160 or 8 million pixels. Since this TV has four times as many pixels as the standard HD TV, the quality and detail of the picture will be much better.
If you are looking for relatively large screen size, UHD is likely the best option on the market in terms of resolution. Not all programs on TV are capable of showcasing 4K picture, but you can often find titles on streaming sites that offer this beautiful resolution.
8K TV
A common reason why you may not have heard of an 8K TV is that there is little-to-no 8K content on the market. It doesn’t make much sense to purchase an 8K TV right now, but if you are an early adopter, you can plan for the future.
Smart or Old School?
Living in the 21st century, nearly every device is connected to the internet. One of the choices you can make when buying your TV is whether or not you want your TV connected as well. For a standard television, if you have a device such as a Roku Streaming Stick, a Google Chromecast, or a gaming system that can connect to the internet, you can watch Netflix or Hulu by plugging them up to your TV with an HDMI cord.
While these specific devices require the internet, a smart TV connects directly to the internet and allows you to stream programs from your online streaming platform directly through your TV. In fact, some TVs even allow for home automation activities by connecting them with a Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. You can turn the TV on or off, as well as adjust the volume, with voice activation.
